Local save and export
How ErgoTax saves your work, what you need to do to protect it, and how to move it between devices.
How saving works
ErgoTax saves your in-progress tax return automatically in your browser's local storage as you work. You do not need to press a save button — changes are persisted locally as you make them.
Local storage is tied to the specific browser, device, and origin (ergotax.app) where you are working. Your saved project is not visible to ErgoTax servers and is not synced to any cloud service.
When local data can be deleted
Your saved project may be deleted if you:
- Clear your browser's cookies, cache, or site data
- Use your browser's "Clear browsing data" feature
- Uninstall or reset your browser
- Use incognito or private browsing mode (local storage may not persist after the session closes)
- Switch to a different browser on the same computer (browsers do not share local storage)
- Use ErgoTax on a different device
In all of these cases, the local project data may be permanently lost unless you have exported a project file.
Exporting your project file
To protect your work, export a project file regularly and especially before:
- Clearing browser data
- Switching browsers or devices
- Uninstalling or updating your browser
- Finishing a work session on your tax return
To export: in the ErgoTax app, use the export function to download a project file to your device. Save this file in a location you control. Treat it like a sensitive financial document — it contains your tax data.
Importing a project file
To continue work from a project file on a new device or browser, open ErgoTax and use the import function to load your project file. Your data will be restored from the file.
Exporting generated forms
Once you have generated your tax forms, export them as PDFs from the ErgoTax app. Store these files in a protected location because they contain sensitive tax information.
Shared and public computers
Do not use ErgoTax on shared, public, or workplace computers.
Local storage on a shared computer is accessible to other users who access the same browser profile. If you use ErgoTax on a shared computer, another user of that computer could access your tax data through the browser's local storage.
Use ErgoTax only on a personal device that you control.
Security of local data
Local storage is not encrypted by the browser by default. It is protected by your device's operating system access controls. Keep your device's screen lock and operating system security settings appropriate for the sensitivity of data you are storing.
If you are concerned about the security of stored tax data, export your project file to an encrypted storage location and consider clearing local storage for ergotax.app after your session.
