Why is preparation free?
Local preparation does not require ErgoTax to run document processing or tax calculation servers on your behalf during normal use. The app and its preparation workflow run in your browser.
Why will e-file have a cost?
E-filing would require transmitting data to the IRS and state agencies, maintaining a transmitter relationship, handling rejections, and providing filing confirmation. Those operations require infrastructure and compliance work that can support a cost.
Will paid plans ever restrict preparation?
Local preparation and form generation are intended to remain free. Any future paid features are expected to be additive, such as filing services, support tiers, or similar services, rather than gates on the core preparation experience.
