Known limitations
ErgoTax is designed to be honest about what it can and cannot do. Read this page before relying on ErgoTax for your taxes.
No e-file
ErgoTax does not submit your return to the IRS or state agencies. It prepares and generates forms for you to review and file separately by mail or another available method. E-file is planned for a future version.
No cloud storage or sync
Your work is saved in local browser storage only. There is no cloud backup, no multi-device sync, and no recovery if your local data is deleted.
Local data loss risk
Clearing your browser's site data, cookies, or cache may delete your local tax project. Incognito and private browsing may not persist data across sessions. Always export your project file before clearing storage.
Limited state support
Most states are in the Planned phase for the 2025 testing year. Check the state support matrix before relying on ErgoTax for your state return.
Limited form coverage
Not every federal form is fully supported yet. Some forms are partial or planned. Use manual entry for unsupported fields. Check the supported forms matrix.
No tax advice
ErgoTax is software. It cannot advise whether a deduction applies to your situation, how to classify income or expenses, or how to respond to IRS or state notices. Consult a qualified tax professional for advice.
Best-effort technical support only
ErgoTax currently offers best-effort technical support for product issues, bugs, and usage questions. There is no SLA or guaranteed response time. Support cannot review your return for correctness.
2025 is a testing year
The 2025 version is a public testing release. 2026 is the first year intended for practical, production-quality use. Generated forms should be reviewed carefully before filing.
No account or recovery system
There is no account system in v1. ErgoTax cannot recover your data if local storage is cleared. Project export is your only backup mechanism.
