Generating forms

How form generation works

When you generate your tax forms, ErgoTax assembles them locally using your reviewed input data and the results of the tax calculations performed by the Rust engine in your browser. The output is rendered into PDF forms on your device for review, printing, or separate filing. During normal form generation, tax return data is not sent to ErgoTax servers.

What forms ErgoTax generates

ErgoTax generates supported federal and state forms based on the data you have entered. See the supported forms matrix for the current list of output forms.

Reviewing the generated output

After generation, review every generated form carefully. Compare the values on the generated form against:

  • Your input documents (W-2, 1099s, etc.)
  • Official IRS or state form instructions for the tax year
  • Any amounts you entered manually

If any value is wrong, go back to the input stage, correct it, and regenerate.

Exporting your forms

Download the generated forms as PDFs. Store them in a secure location. Treat them like sensitive financial documents because they are.

Filing your forms

ErgoTax does not file your return in v1. After generating and reviewing your forms, you are responsible for filing them. Options include:

  • Mailing the printed forms to the IRS and your state agency
  • Using another filing method that accepts prepared forms
  • Consulting a tax professional who can review and file on your behalf

E-file directly through ErgoTax is planned for a future version. See the pricing page for details.

2025 testing year note

The 2025 version of ErgoTax is a public testing release. Generated forms should be verified with extra care before filing. Always check the generated output against the official IRS or state instructions for your specific tax year.
